Feature film - 2019
On August 2nd, 1912, the Estonian National Museum sent a message to all Estonian newspapers, stating: “In June, the museum sent photographer Joh. Pääsuke out to capture images of interesting landscapes, people's work and rituals, buildings, ethnographic subjects, and individuals...”
Hardi Volmer’s feature film tells an adventurous and romantic story of Estonia’s first filmmaker, Johannes Pääsuke, through his mysterious research expedition to Setomaa in the summer of 1912. Only seven minutes survived from the entire journey? There should have been more, but no one knows what happened to the missing footage. Pääsuke’s travel diary, which he diligently kept, has also vanished.
This knowledge gives us a tempting, yet also risky opportunity to recreate that distant journey the way we imagine it. We fill in the gaps between the old footage with what time has taken from us.
Ott Sepp, Märt Avandi, Tõnu Kark, Ester Kuntu, Üllar Saaremäe, Merle Jääger, Ville Hytönen, Peeter Raudsepp, Robert Annus, Ardo Ran Varres, Maria Kallaste, Tõnu Oja, Tanel Jonas, Carmen Mikiver, Aleksandr Okunev, Urmas Sepp, Fatme Helge Leevald, Milena Salonen, Valentina Kremen, Aleksandr Kutšmetsov, Meelike Kruusamäe, Liisa Aibel, Karl-Kristjan Puusepp, Mait Trink, Heino Kalm, Erik Ruus, Sergei Tšerkassov.
