Starting from April 28, cinemas will screen Raivo Kelomees' documentary "Luulur".
The film's main character is Jaan Malin, also known as Luulur. Luulur's artistic form, häälutamine – a term introduced by Ilmar Laaban – is connected to Dadaism and Surrealism. In his monologue, Malin reflects on the influence of his father, artist Ilmar Malin, and poet Ilmar Laaban, exploring the expectations and tensions related to them.
The film delves into Luulur's life story, his performances at international experimental poetry events, and includes interviews with well-known authors discussing the notion of “meaningless” art. This theme is also mirrored in Malin’s novel "Maa ja ilm", written in an invented language.
Kelomees investigates how Luulur goes beyond his influences, creating dialogues with other artists such as Roomet Jakapi, Ivi Rausi, and Tobias Kunze. His curatorial work for the festival “Hullunud Tartu” and his practice of häälutamine open up Estonian surrealism and Luulur’s expressive creativity, raising the question of whether art must always possess a clear meaning.
The film is written and directed by Raivo Kelomees. Cinematographers include Jako Krull, Aldo Luud, Raivo Kelomees, Aleksandr Heifets, and Rihhard Krüüner. The music is composed by Rooluulend, edited by Elina Kengsepp, with sound design by Horret Kuus. Color grading is done by Märten Vaher, and the poster is designed by Marko Kekishev. The producer is Anneli Ahven, and the film is produced by Kopli Kinokompanii and Karm Film.
